The statue of Ethen Allen is the only thing left of the original capitol. The present day Capitol was built in 1859 and is one of the oldest and best-preserved state capitols in the US. Ethan Allen was the leader of the Vermont Green Mountain Boys. They captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British in 1775. Ethan Allen was a hero in the American Revolutionary War and Vermont's favorite son.
