Jewel Cave National Monument

Sign for the historic old entrance to Jewel Cave. Pres. Teddy Roosevelt designated Jewel Cave a National Monument in 1908. The Parks Service took over Jewel Cave in 1933 and started offering tours in 1939. In 1972 The Park Service put in a 300 ft (91m) elevator plus stairs and platforms to open up the present day scenic tour loop.
